48 Hours to Film and Photography 30,000 sqft of a incredible home inspired by Frank Lloyd Wrights "Falling Water"

Immersed in the Home: Filming and Photographing the $25M "Fallingwater" of the West Coast in Blackhawk

Having to photograph and film a 30,000-square-foot estate isn't just about showing a house, it’s about documenting an architectural legacy, focusing on the details, and making it feel like a home. Recently, I had the privilege of spending back to back marathon days at Eagle Ridge, an iconic property in the Blackhawk Country Club. Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater, this estate is one of a kind in organic architecture, defined by stone, water, and vast expanses of glass. I was excited, as there really is no other home like this around and I knew it was going to take every bit of skill I had to produce images I was proud of.

Capturing a home of this magnitude, while having to keep up with speedy real estate delivery time, requires a specialized strategy and work flow that balances technical precision with luxury storytelling. You also need to have built trust with your clients, them knowing you are going to deliver the visuals they need for a property this incredible. Here is how I tackled one of the most unique properties in California.

Master Skills for Unique Properties

When a home features floor-to-ceiling windows across 30,000 square feet, and wood floors and ceilings, the primary challenge is light and reflection management. I don’t love a lot of glare in my photos, especially when the floor is so unique and a selling point to the home. There are ways to improve this :

  • Flash Techniques: To honor the architectural intent, I utilized strategic flash, up to 5 flash in one image, to accentuate the rich colors of the materials while neutralizing the intense glare that naturally occurs with massive windows. You can’t just hit just one flash in a home like this, you need the tools to bring in extra clean and soft light. This ensured that the fine details in the custom flooring and intricate ceilings weren't lost to "hot spots."

  • Polarized Blending: In the grand ballroom, the reflections from the glass walls and polished floors were immense. By blending multiple polarized images, I was able to surgically remove distracting reflections, revealing the true texture and depth of the space.

The Power of Sunrise to Sunset Coverage

For a property this expansive, a two-hour "golden hour" shoot is insufficient. We committed to full-day coverage to follow the sun’s path around the structure for both Photography and Video

  • The Morning Glow: At sunrise, the central courtyard becomes a sanctuary of soft, golden light that highlights the "living with nature" philosophy of the home. Once that sun moves even a few hour later, that glow is lost and its just flat light.

  • The Sunset Facade: As the sun dips, the back facade becomes the star. We timed our drone flights and interior great room shots to catch the exact moment the sun reflected off the glass, creating a glow that bridged the gap between the outdoors and the interior stone-work.

Cinema Tools: Incredible Video in a Single Day

To deliver a world-class cinematic experience on a compressed schedule, we deployed some of the highest-end tech in the industry. I have collected the best tools for what I do, that makes my images and color stand out.

  • RED Raptor X & Extended Highlights: The view at Eagle Ridge is its soul. Using the RED Raptor X, I utilized the Extended Highlights feature to ensure we preserved every detail of the Blackhawk hills through the windows while maintaining perfect exposure inside. This dynamic range allowed the natural rock textures throughout the home to pop with a cinematic "crunch" that standard cameras simply can't reproduce. The colors are vibrant and rich. The sharpness is in every frame.

  • DJI Inspire 3 & RTK Precision: To create my signature "Day-to-Night" aerial transitions, we used the Inspire 3 with RTK positioning. By programming repeatable flight routes, we captured the exact same movement at noon, in the early afternoon and at twilight, allowing for a seamless morph in the final edit. No cheesy transitions to hide poor flights - This is seamless and beautiful. The Inspire 3’s low-light capabilities ensured the twilight footage remained clean, sharp, and vibrant. Other drones over process there night images, but not this camera. Shooting in raw I have full control over how these low light video shots feel.

  • Immersive Sound Design: A house this large has its own voice—the sound of water features both inside and out, and the echo of the stone halls. We captured high-fidelity field recordings on-site to build a custom soundscape, making the viewer feel like they are actually walking through the halls.

Authority in the Luxury Space

In the California luxury market, the expectations are exceptionally high and the timelines are notoriously tight. You may only have access for 1 or 2 days and that’s it. There is no room for mistakes. For a 30,000-square-foot estate like Eagle Ridge, a standard "one-man-one-camera" approach would typically require three to four days of onsite shooting followed by a week of post-production. We didn't have that luxury. The client required a massive volume of high-end assets—stills, cinematic film, and social content—ready for market immediately. Meeting this demands a trusted workflow and system that produces the best images, every time.

Parallel Workflow & Logistics

To condense a four-day schedule into back to back sunrise-to-sunset Photo and Video shoots, we deployed a multi-system strategy:

  • Simultaneous Capture: While I was executing the primary full lit interior stills, I had multiple secondary camera bodies stationed across the property. This allowed us to capture long-form interior and exterior time-lapses of the shifting light across the Blackhawk hills without pausing the primary production.

  • Camera Station : The first thing I do at the start of every shoot is set up all my equipment. This way, at any point I can access any tool I need. This allows me to be quick and nimble when the light hits just right - Grabbing a video shot of a sunset, then getting the drone in the air immediately to have the same light for both photo and video. This is why my videos feel so uniformed, because there is a balance and continuation of light.

  • The 72-Hour Pipeline: There really is not a moment to waste, and the work didn't end when we packed the gear. Handling 8K .r3d files from the RED Raptor and high-resolution medium format stills requires massive processing power and an organized data-management system. By leveraging a specialized off-site editing team, we moved into post-production the moment the sun went down and had those photos getting worked on right away.
